Boyden the recipient of the Curt Sachs Award for the year 1983 in recognition of his outstanding eminence as a scholar, teacher, performer, and conductor in a long and distinguished career. His book, A History of Violin Playing from Its Origins to 1761, represents a contribution of unique importance to our knowledge of the instrument, combining penetrating scholarship with a performer's insight.
